Bollywood has been around for almost two decades now and has become one of the most popular entertainment forms in the world. It is a genre that has sprung up from nowhere, but has gone on to redefine what is considered a movie, how it is made and what it is even good at. Here are a few things you need to know about Bollywood.
To begin with, Bollywood movies, like their Indian counterparts, have lots of dancers, singers and musicians on-set, as well as a plethora of backgrounds for actors and actresses. However, the artistry in Bollywood movie making is much higher than in the Indian film industry. Also, this does not mean that all Indian movies fall short of Bollywood standards. In fact, even Bollywood has set its own standard which means that the Indian cinema industry has high expectations to live up to.
Much of the best Bollywood movies are based on modern concepts like the modern hero being forced to make a choice between his family and the cause he’s fighting for. This is quite common in contemporary Hindi movies like the Kamal Shetty’s Raavan (Raavan’s Return), which is one of the most popular films of all time. As a young boy hero is forced to sacrifice his desire to be a Bollywood star by the death of his father to carry on the family legacy. It is an allegory of life and our mortality.
Another Bollywood hit of this decade is the highly anticipated Hindukush (Hindu God), which is going to be released later this year. The movie, which is based on the mythological tale of Ganesha, will star Akshay Kumar and Rajnikanth. This epic film is expected to bring out good natured fun and slapstick fun which were missing from Bollywood films previously.
It has been said that the best Bollywood song is always sung by its lead singer and actress. Thus, if you want to watch some of the best Bollywood songs then a movie like Dhoom (Deck The Halls) is ideal to watch.
Even though Bollywood is mostly known for its popular music, it also has its share of artful film making and excellent direction. Several directors like Shyam Benegal, Arvind Deshpande, Salim-Javed and Karan Johar have created some of the best Bollywood films.
Of course, Bollywood has many genres such as the modern day action films like Babumoshaiyaan Mastan (Temptation Of God) and Lagaan (The Day The World Turned Black) where the character’s battle to save the motherland, and even some Bollywood classic movies like Jodha Akbar (Aurangzeb) and Jab We Met Again (Koh Se Phool Ka Mahaar) where the emotions prevail over the violence. No matter what genre you like, the movies of Bollywood will not disappoint you. As long as you are prepared to wait for a long time, you will definitely enjoy one of their movies.
It is ironic that Bollywood is a genre that is largely based on the ‘how’ of the genre, which is a relatively new idea in Indian cinema. As long as the future prospects of Bollywood remain bright, we can expect this genre to grow as well as thrive, just like everything else in the country.
